Roosters star Victor Radley has reportedly been unwittingly dragged into the police investigation into alleged drug dealing by his former teammate Brandon Smith, who has been charged with drug supply and using inside knowledge for betting.

South Sydney hooker Smith was questioned by police when he arrived in Queensland ahead of their August 10 clash with Gold Coast, but released without charge.

However, Queensland Police on Monday confirmed the 29-year-old Rabbitohs star had been charged with the two alleged offences.

There is no suggestion that Radley is accused of any wrongdoing. He is not a person of interest to Queensland Police, the publication said.

Radley was in Queensland with Roosters teammates on a golf holiday at the time of the alleged incident on June 7 that resulted in the charges against Smith.

Police allege Smith sent the drug dealer information on the team Souths would field in their round 18 match against Manly, including his own availability for the game, which the dealer then used to place bets, the publication reported.

McGirr said Smith will fight the charges and will make no comment.

‘The allegation confirms Brandon wasn’t even in the jurisdiction of Queensland at the time of the alleged offending,’ McGirr said.

That statement was echoed by South Sydney, with the club releasing a statement saying: ‘Through his solicitor Paul McGirr, the club understands that Brandon was not physically in the jurisdiction of Queensland when this matter was alleged to have occurred, and therefore, we are instructed that the matter will be contested.’

According to section six of Queensland’s Drugs Misuse Act, ‘A person who unlawfully supplies a dangerous drug to another, whether or not such other person is in Queensland, is guilty of a crime.’

Smith is set to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on September 18.

‘Investigations by detectives from the Organised Crime Gangs Group, Taskforce Maxima, South Eastern Region are continuing,’ Queensland Police said in a statement on Monday.

Smith was questioned ahead of Souths’ match against the Titans earlier this month after police said they had cause to speak to the 29-year-old at Coolangatta Airport.

However, he was released without charge and played against the Gold Coast.

‘We chatted to him about a number of things and then he was able to go on and play football,’ acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy said.

‘We have an ongoing police matter that we are dealing with.

‘Brandon was very co-operative with us and he was able to go on and play a good game of football from what I saw.’

South Sydney said they were aware of the allegations and had informed the NRL integrity unit.

‘As this matter is part of a Queensland Police investigation, the Rabbitohs will be making no further comment at this stage,’ a club statement said.

On Tuesday, Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett declared his strong support for Smith.

‘We could stand him down if we wanted to. I don’t know where it stands with the NRL, it’s ultimately their decision whether to stand him down,’ Bennett said.

‘He has been charged and he has to appear before the courts.

‘The NRL has a decision to make because obviously another player is now involved as well.

‘But I’m not standing him down … that’s not going to happen.’

Comment is being sought from the NRL.

At his peak, Smith was one of the NRL’s best rakes and earned crowd favourite status thanks to his larrikin persona.

He won the 2020 premiership with Melbourne before being named Dally M Hooker of the Year the next season.

Smith made a high-profile mid-season switch from the Sydney Roosters to bitter rivals Souths this season, but injuries have restricted him to only four games for his new club to date.

Smith – who has played 13 Tests for New Zealand – is contracted at the Rabbitohs until the end of the 2027 campaign.
