Pep Guardiola believes his Manchester City players can now be considered ‘legends’ after picking up their fourth Premier League title in the last five seasons.

City fell two goals behind against Aston Villa on Sunday, and looked in danger of throwing away their crown at the final hurdle, but they mounted a stunning comeback to claim a 3-2 victory.

‘We are legends,’ he told Sky Sports in the aftermath of his side’s win.

‘When you win in this country, the Premier League four times in five years, it’s because these guys are so, so special. We’ll be remembered. Winning at home with our people, it’s the best.’

The 51-year-old was asked what he said to his players at half time after his side went into the break 1-0 down.

Guardiola replied: ‘It was score the goal, and go (with) the momentum. Our people did the rest.’

Ilkay Gundogan proved to be City’s hero, coming off the bench to score twice, either side of a Rodri strike.

Guardiola was asked to explain why he turned to Gundogan instead of the other options he had, including Jack Grealish.

‘Ilkay Gundogan is the best runner in the second position that we have arrive in the side, he’s the best,’ he responded.

Having been praised by the Sky Sports pundits for bringing on Gundogan, Guardiola sent out a reminder that he will get more opportunities to change the momentum in games next term.

‘Next season it is five substitutions. And you will see how (much of a) genius I am! You will see, don’t worry!’ he joked.

City’s dramatic win ensured that they finished a point clear of Liverpool in the final standings. Guardiola was keen to hail Liverpool’s contribution to another exciting title race.

‘I’ve never seen a team like Liverpool in my life. I know it’s tough, but big congratulations. They help us to be a better team season-by-season,’ he added.
