Pep Guardiola and Erik ten Hag were on the same side at Bayern Munich, but are now beginning what could be a long-running rivalry.

Ten Hag worked under Guardiola in Germany with the Dutchman in charge of the Bayern Munich reserves while the Spaniard managed the first team.

The two then went their separate ways, heading to FC Utrecht and Manchester City respectively, but are in close quarters again now with Ten Hag taking charge of Manchester United.

Here’s their complete head-to-head record as managers.

All the talk heading into the first clash between Guardiola and Ten Hag was about Erling Haaland, who was going into his first Manchester derby in fine form.

With the Norwegian taking England by storm and Man Utd still finding their feet under Ten Hag, many expected the striker to find the back of the next, and he did so on three occasions.

His opponents couldn’t handle him in the first half as he scored two goals and set up another to give his team a 4-0 lead at the break, with Guardiola humiliating Man Utd’s new boss.

The humiliation continued in the second half with Haaland getting another goal and another assist after Antony got his team on the scoreboard to make it 6-1.

Ten Hag restored some pride in the closing stages of the game as Anthony Martial bagged a late double to make it 6-3, but it was a match to forget for the Dutchman nonetheless.

Man Utd put together a head of steam form-wise before the return Manchester derby of the 2022/23 season. However, they would fall behind on the hour mark.

Kevin De Bruyne’s chipped cross found Jack Grealish in the middle and the England international rose highest to nod in.

However, United’s persistence paid off as a Casemiro through ball worked its way to Bruno Fernandes. Although Marcus Rashford had run from an offside position, he was adjudged not to have interfered before Fernandes curled in.

Rashford, who appeared to pull up injured earlier in the game, was then on hand to finish Alejandro Garnacho’s cross to give United another important win and Ten Hag’s first over Guardiola.

Erling Haland

The FA Cup trophy arrived at Wembley ahead of the 2023 final with the word ‘Manchester’ already etched into the famous silver. After 13 seconds, the engraver may have felt compelled to start chiselling out a ‘C’.

In the time it would take the average UK typist to strike out eight words – considerably less than this sentence – Ilkay Gundogan had volleyed City into an emphatic lead.

However, Bruno Fernandes converted a controversial penalty to haul United level before the interval.

Gundogan bobbled in his second – less impressive – volley of the afternoon beyond David de Gea’s feeble dive shortly after the break but United had amble opportunity to equalise again only to be foiled by a penalty box scramble.

Ten Hag had promised to “give everything” to win the first Manchester derby in an FA Cup final but it wasn’t enough to defeat Guardiola.

There was only one team in the contest when City rocked up to Old Trafford in October 2023, looking to earn Guardiola his first win over Ten Hag on home soil.

Erling Haaland grabbed a brace as the reigning Premier League champions assumed control, and the super-smiley Phil Foden put the cherry on top of the cake with a third ten minutes from time.

United never really threatened, much to the chagrin of their supporters, and they were left to lick their wounds from another disappointing defeat.
