Newcastle took a big step towards a top-five finish and next season’s Champions League by beating Chelsea 2-0 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

Sandro Tonali’s early goal gave the hosts the perfect start, and Chelsea struggled to react as they were overwhelmed by the Magpies’ intensity both in possession and without. Newcastle performed well without creating many chances, with Robert Sanchez seldom tested.

Harvey Barnes and Bruno Guimaraes missed less than clear-cut chances, while Dan Burn’s header narrowly went wide after Nicolas Jackson was sent off for hitting Sven Botman with a forearm. It put Chelsea in a tough position, but they responded well post-half-time. During their strongest phase, Nick Pope made a superb save to block a shot from Marc Cucurella.

Newcastle couldn’t regain control, with Chelsea continuing to pose a threat despite being a man short. Reece James, who came on at half-time, missed a significant header opportunity late in the game, and his miss proved pivotal. Shortly thereafter, a Bruno Guimaraes shot from distance, deflected, secured the win for the hosts, who will end the weekend in third place.

Chelsea, meanwhile, risk sliding out of the top five. They’ll be cheering on Leicester at the City Ground.
