Real Madrid and Manchester City drew 3-3 after a breathtaking encounter at the Bernabeu in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Bernardo Silva’s cheeky free kick after less than two minutes put the reigning champions ahead, but Real hit back straight away with Eduardo Camavinga’s shot deflecting in off Ruben Dias.

Almost instantly, Carlo Ancelotti’s side went 2-1 up through Rodrygo, before Phil Foden’s stunner in the second half brought City level.

Mail Sport’s JACK GAUGHAN was at the Bernabeu to run the rule over the two sides…

Real Madrid

Real Madrid (4-2-3-1)

Andriy Lunin – 5.5

Embarrassing moment for Bernardo Silva’s early opener. Recovered and good distribution thereafter.

Dani Carvajal – 6

Could have been targeted more. Didn’t seem particularly comfortable with Jack Grealish’s running.

Antonio Rudiger – 7.5

Had the measure of Erling Haaland. Relishes the physicality of a big striker and City played into his hands.

Aurelien Tchouameni – 6.5

Very silly tackle that saw him booked and suspended for next week. A huge block on Grealish was eye-catching.

Ferland Mendy – 7.5

Some key interventions, especially when besting Haaland at the back post. Got Real moving forward too.

Toni Kroos – 6.5

Crucial in breaking up play and nicking possession. A solid base for those ahead of him to counter at pace.

Eduardo Camavinga – 6.5

Fortunate that the equaliser took a big deflection. Did the defensive side well and took risks on the ball.

Federico Valverde – 7

Primary function was to stretch City so when the ball switched. And a special hit to rattle in an equaliser.

Jude Bellingham – 6.5

Got through plenty of decent work in a defensive sense, especially when turning possession over.

Rodrygo – 7.5

Cute finish to give Real the lead and a thorn in Manuel Akanji’s side throughout the night.

Vinicius Junior – 7

A livewire and his speed put the fear into City. Clever pass for Rodrygo’s goal although did fade later on.

Subs

Luka Modric (for Rodrygo, 72) – 6

Brahim Diaz (for Kroos, 72) – 6

Joselu (for Vinicius Jnr, 86) – N/A

Manchester City

Manchester City (4-1-4-1)

Stefan Ortega – 6

Nothing the German could do about any of the goals. Decent with his feet in possibly dangerous areas.

Manuel Akanji – 6

Did well to initially hold Rodrygo up for the Brazilian’s but an argument he should have hung back in the build-up.

John Stones – 8

The one who really wanted to progress the ball. Such a clever ball for Phil Foden’s equaliser. Oozed class.

Ruben Dias – 5.5

An unsteady display. Never seemed completely sure of himself and it might’ve transmitted to others.

Josko Gvardiol – 7

A stunning goal to smash in City’s third, although may think he could’ve done more to thwart Valverde.

Rodri – 5

City’s back four needed far more protection than Rodri offered. Sloppy on the ball before the break too.

Bernardo Silva – 7

Genius early free-kick. Attempted to slow the game down off the right but caught on it a few times.

Mateo Kovacic – 5

First thought was always backwards. Didn’t seem to sit in for Rodri intelligently enough either.

Phil Foden – 7

Very quiet in a central role all night – until he smashed in the equaliser, underlining his importance.

Jack Grealish – 7

Superb run to win the Silva free kick. Wasn’t utilised enough to isolate Carvajal. Looked lively.

Erling Haaland – 6

More involvement when the referee accidentally struck him on the nose at half-time than during the entire first half. Did improve significantly after the break.

Subs

Julian Alvarez (for Foden, 87) – N/A
