Real Madrid in mourning after their honorary president Amancio Amaro dies aged 83, with Spanish side paying tribute to the star who dazzled during the 1960s and racked up 155 goals in golden era

Real Madrid legend Amancio Amaro – who played for the club during a golden spell for 14 years – has died at the age of 83.
Amaro is adored by fans of the Spanish side having played 471 games, scored 155 goals and helped them to nine league titles after joining from Deportivo La Coruna back in 1962.
Amaro was nicknamed El Brujo (The Magician) during his playing days on the right wing and went on to become honorary club president. His passing was announced on the official Real Madrid website, with Karim Benzema also paying tribute on Instagram.
A statement read: ‘Real Madrid CF, its president and its Board of Directors deeply regret the death of Amancio Amaro, honorary president of Real Madrid and one of the great legends of our club and of world football.
‘Real Madrid would like to express its condolences and affection to his wife Consuelo, his children Óscar, Belén, Amancio, Patricia, Marcos and Claudia, his brother Juan Carlos, his grandchildren and all his relatives, colleagues and loved ones.

‘He has always been an example for Real Madrid fans and for the entire world of sport.
‘In 1966 he won the sixth European Cup for Real Madrid at the Heysel stadium in Brussels, in a historic final in which he scored our team’s first goal to beat Partizan Belgrade.
‘In addition to the 1966 European Cup, Amaro wo nine Leagues and three Spanish Cups with Real Madrid.’
Amaro came to Real after their glorious decade of success, during which they won an astonishing five consecutive European Cups.
He was part of the next phase who carried the momentum forward and helped Real become established as a superpower of the game.
After his playing career, Amaro went on to become a coach with Castilla, Real’s subsidiary team.
He led them to the second division title and they remain the only subsidiary team to have managed the feat to this day.
Amaro leaves an impressive legacy behind and the club sent condolences to his family
