Former Bournemouth and Fulham boss Scott Parker is interested in becoming the next manager of Rangers.

Frank Lampard and Kevin Muscat remain bookmakers’ favourites to replace Michael Beale — with the Ibrox club’s search certain to be stepped up after last night’s dismal 2-1 defeat to Cypriots Aris Limassol in the Europa League.

Former England international Parker is out of work after his brief reign at Club Brugge ended in March.

The 42-year-old Londoner began his managerial career at Craven Cottage where he oversaw promotion from — and relegation to — the English Championship.

Moving to Bournemouth, the former West Ham, Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder again won promotion to the Premier League before a disagreement with the board over transfer policy ended in a parting of the ways in August last year.

Meanwhile, interim boss Steven Davis last night issued a plea for unity ahead on Sunday’s visit to high-flying St Mirren after the Ibrox side were jeered off in his first match since replacing Beale.

Goals from Alex Moucketou-Moussounda and Shavy Babicka placed the Cypriots in the driving seat in this Group C clash before Abdallah Sima’s consolation.

‘Obviously, confidence has been hit,’ said Davis. ‘You go through these periods in your career and it’s a really difficult moment.

‘But the most important thing right now is us being a group together.

‘By sticking together, you make sure to do the basics right in terms of hard work and application, which they have been doing.

‘It’s important we continue that and things will turn because I believe in the qualities of the squad. I still believe we have some real quality players and they’re all desperate to turn it around. We know the expectations of the club and we are not standing up to them at this current minute in time.

‘I believe when we get everybody playing to the ability they have got then we will start to turn it around.’

Rangers had started their campaign with a fine 1-0 home win against Real Betis. They now sit third in Group C but Davis insisted the players gave their all against Limassol.

He said: ‘There wasn’t a lack of effort. Everyone is trying to do the right thing in many ways.

‘We would never question that from the dressing room.

‘I think we caused a lot of our own problems in the game. We were disappointed with the two goals we gave away. When that happens, you have a mountain to climb.

‘In the first half, we kept trying to play in the middle of the pitch when it wasn’t really on, and they were good at getting transitions from that with the pace they had up front.

‘Whenever you go behind in a second half, you must throw some caution to the wind at certain points. But, ultimately we didn’t do enough to take something.’
