Chelsea booked their place in the semi-finals of the League Cup on Tuesday when they defeated Newcastle United 4-2 in a penalty shootout at Stamford Bridge after the two sides finished the 90 minutes level at 1-1.

Kieran Trippier fired Newcastle’s second penalty wide and Matt Ritchie saw his effort saved by Djordje Petrovic, making only his second start in goal for the Blues.

The shootout drama represented a last-gasp turnaround by Chelsea who had gone behind in the 16th minute when Callum Wilson pounced on an error by Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile who got the ball caught in his feet allowing Wilson to score.

Mail Sport’s Adrian Kajumba takes you through the things you might have missed.

Hall finds it hard to get noticed

Lewis Hall was on the back of the programme as a Newcastle player but a notable absence from the visiting side’s profiles inside it.

Left-back Hall is on loan at Newcastle from Chelsea who granted permission for him to play against them in this quarter-final tie. His omission was perhaps due to the expectation he would not be involved. He was only named on the bench though, continuing a frustrating season since his summer switch to St James’s Park, which contains an obligation for Newcastle to buy him for £28million.

The 19-year-old Cobham academy graduate scored in the 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in the last round back in early November. But he has only made one Premier League start for Eddie Howe’s side so far.

Caicedo is a good sport

There was good sportsmanship from Moises Caicedo who put the ball out of play when Anthony Gordon was down needing lengthy treatment.

His team-mates were not best pleased but Blues striker Nicolas Jackson did applaud the gesture.

Wilson mimics Watkins’ celebration

Newcastle scored one first-half goal but celebrated in notable fashion as if they scored two.

Callum Wilson gave a section of home supporters the Ollie Watkins treatment, stopping to provocatively mark his goal after spotting a few offensive gestures aimed his way.

Midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, meanwhile, roared towards the Newcastle fans after his goalline clearance.

Onuoha to the rescue

Defender by trade during a playing career that included eight years at Manchester City and another six at QPR, Nedum Onuoha showed the reactions and strong wrists of a goalkeeper when an Axel Disasi clearance dropped out of the sky and towards the press box.

He stuck up a hand to push the ball back towards the pitch, protecting those around him and also a few laptops!

Mudryk irks Chelsea coaches

Mykhaylo Mudryk was the first Chelsea substitute beckoned to warm up when Enzo Fernandez indicated that he was injured — and came off after 32 minutes.

Chelsea’s coaches, however, appeared to have an issue with how ready Mudryk was at that stage and he did not end up getting on until 78 minutes.

He was to make a big impact, though, with a stoppage-time leveller.
