Tottenham Hotspur made an enquiry to Liverpool regarding the availability of Joe Gomez during the January transfer window, according to a report.

Spurs’ push to sign a new centre-back mid-season was made public by head coach Ange Postecoglou throughout the autumn. The Greek-Australian sanctioned the sale of Davinson Sanchez to Galatasaray after England’s summer window closed and was reluctant to use Eric Dier prior his winter move to Bayern Munich, instead calling on full-backs Ben Davies and Emerson Royal to play through the middle.

They eventually moved to sign Radu Dragusin from Genoa, but the Daily Mail report they also had Gomez on their radar.

The north Londoners are said to have made an enquiry to Liverpool, though they did not get very far with their advances as Gomez remained at Anfield.

Though naturally a centre-back, Gomez has spent much of the season filling in at full-back this season – he has played only four games at centre-back compared to 17 at right-back and 14 at left-back, while he has also been used twice in midfield. This versatility and his quality on the ball prompted Tottenham to ask about Gomez.

Liverpool’s injury crisis has allowed Gomez a route back into the first-team having lost his starting spot over the last couple of years. He was a regular during their Champions League and Premier League winning campaigns of 2018/19 and 2019/20 before a serious knee injury derailed his development.

Gomez has managed to remain injury-free this season and has only been unavailable through one game, which was due to illness. There are growing calls for him to be reinstated into Gareth Southgate’s England squad having not represented the Three Lions since 2020 and only accrued 11 senior caps.
