Tottenham 1-0 Man United - PLAYER RATINGS: Which 'nervy' 3/10 star was a gamble that backfired? And whose 9/10 performance sealed 'legendary' status?

Tottenham ended their 17-year trophy drought in style as they claimed their first European honour since 1984 with their 1-0 win against Manchester United in Wednesday’s Europa League final.

It was do or die for both teams, who have endured Premier League seasons to forget, with Man United 16th and Spurs 17th with one game to go.

But with one chance to save their season – and book Champions League football for the next – Ange Postecoglou’s side stepped up.

But which other Manchester United stars struggled? Who shone? And who were the star men for Tottenham?

Here, Mail Sport’s Nathan Salt runs the rule over the standouts and sorry souls to feature in Bilbao.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (4-3-3)

Guglielmo Vicario – 5

Gift-wrapped a golden opportunity for Amad Diallo after a weak punch from a corner in the first half. Got bailed out by Micky van de Ven with another error in the second half.

Pedro Porro – 7

Wasn’t the attacking force we know he can be but he restricted Manchester United to very little down that left side. A disciplined display when Tottenham needed it most.

Cristian Romero – 6.5

Clever at knowing when to slow the game down and bleed the clock. Had a lot more to do physically when Joshua Zirkzee came on.

Micky van de Ven – 7

Made a spectacular acrobatic clearance on the line to spare the blushes of his goalkeeper at 1-0. Can see why Postecoglou wrapped him in cotton wool recently. Booked.

Destiny Udogie – 5

Had his hands full with Amad Diallo and came out second best more often than not. Fluffed a two-on-one with Dominic Solanke which could have iced the game.

Yves Bissouma – 6.5

Neat and tidy in what was a desperately poor game all told. Was a calm head until he lost it when he tangled up Amad Diallo as the pressure ramped up.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 6

So, so quiet in this contest all told. Spent a lot of it chasing the shadow of Bruno Fernandes. Not his finest game in a Tottenham shirt but no obvious errors.

Pape Matar Sarr – 7

It was his ball in that caused havoc in the Manchester United area as Spurs took a 1-0 lead. Such a serene presence that doesn’t always get the plaudits he deserves.

Brennan Johnson – 7.5

Looked very nervy in the opening exchanges but soon settled down and he was a pest for Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu. Scored the all important goal to open this game up.

Dominic Solanke – 4.5

Had nine touches and made just three touches in a first half where it was easy to forget he was playing. Poor showing in a poor game.

Richarlison – 6.5

Preferred to Son Heung-min, he was constant menace that never gave United a moment’s peace. Made too many petulant fouls in the second half. Booked.

MANAGER: Ange Postecoglou – 9

Legendary status – even in a campaign finishing 17th. Whatever happens next, Ange Postecoglou promised a trophy and he delivered.

MANCHESTER UNITED (3-4-2-1)

Andre Onana – 5

Was exposed by his defenders for the opening goal but even still he flapped at the ball before it was in.

Leny Yoro – 6.5

Passed fit after his recent injury scare and he was cool, calm and collected. United’s best player on the pitch here.

Harry Maguire – 6

A really commanding presence that nullified any potential threat from Dominic Solanke. Didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

Luke Shaw – 4

Looked nervy from the moment it kicked off and he switched off to allow Brennan Johnson to nip ahead of him as he turned into his own net for 1-0. Picking him was a gamble that backfired spectacularly.

Noussair Mazraoui – 6

Made a goal-saving intervention nine minutes in to deny Richarlison heading in. His limitations going forward underline the need for orthodox wing-backs if Ruben Amorim is to succeed.

Casemiro – 6

Made an aggressive start to set the tone but he soon found himself sussed out by his markers.

Bruno Fernandes – 5

Cut a frustrated figure with the slowness with which his team-mates passed, ran and moved. Not blameless after he cheaply gave the ball away in the lead up to the goal but he deserves to have much better players around him.

Patrick Dorgu – 5

Looked like he didn’t know if he was coming or going too often. Switched off and was slow to react for the opening Spurs goal.

Amad Diallo – 6

Should have put United ahead when he flashed a strike just wide of the post early on. Had to do a lot on his own. Booked for a shirt pull on Destiny Udogie.

Mason Mount – 4

Preferred to Alejandro Garnacho because of his ability to press but he was forever on the periphery of this contest. Totally anonymous by the time he got hooked.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4

Had eight touches and zero shots in the first half. He’s out there, sure, but he constantly feels such a non-factor.

MANAGER: Ruben Amorim – 4

Disaster. Badly needed a win here to inspire some belief in his system and principles moving forward. A long and painful summer to stew on this abject failure now.

Mason Mount enjoyed an impressive semi-final to book United's spot in Bilbao but did nothing with his starting role

Joshua Zirkzee (for Rasmus Hojlund, 71) – 6

Was harshly booked after a clean tackle on Destiny Udogie but was much more of a handful than Rasmus Hojlund was at any point.

Alejandro Garnacho (for Mason Mount, 71) – 6.5

Posed a genuine threat down the left, something United didn’t possess for the 71 minutes before he came onto the pitch. Proved that leaving him out was a mistake.

Diogo Dalot (for Noussair Mazraoui, 85)
