USMNT and Bournemouth holding midfielder Tyler Adams is set to be sidelined until February after he suffered a second hamstring injury inside of a calendar year.

According to Paul Tenorio of The Athletic, Adams had surgery two weeks ago and is expected to take up to five months to recover – putting his timeline to return between mid-February and mid-March.

Adams only just moved to Bournemouth this summer from Leeds United, who suffered in his absence from a hamstring injury back in March.

On his debut for his new club, a Carabao Cup match against Stoke City on September 27, Adams suffered what manager Andoni Iroala called a ‘setback’.

Adams was brought on in the 70th minute of that Stoke match and played for the final 20 minutes.

‘Tyler, we don’t expect him soon again with us,’ Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola said on October 6. ‘I think the medical staff are analyzing the situation. They are asking different specialists to take the best route we have.

‘We still haven’t decided. But whatever the solution he takes or we take, we don’t expect him soon on the pitch. It’s the same hamstring.

‘He’s not feeling well. He played some minutes because he wanted to give it a try, but he didn’t have good sensations. Now, we stop because something is not going well.

‘Because you’ve done all the previous things, so you should be ready to perform now and things are not going well. We have to think of another solution yet. I think even surgery is not out of the question.

‘It’s a possibility because we have to make sure that once we have him, we have him without any issue. 100 per cent. And I think they are analyzing everything now. We have to take a decision.’

Adams was set to make a return to the US men’s national team for their recent October friendlies against Germany and Ghana, but this injury meant he was not included in the team sheet.

USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter said that were it not for Adams’ injury that he would have made a return to the team.

The USA struggled without Adams in the team in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Germans as his defensive presence wasn’t replicated by the likes of Weston McKennie, Luca de la Torre, or Yunus Musah.

However, the Americans bounced back in Nashville with a 4-0 win over Ghana – where defensive midfielder Lenny Maloney made his debut.

While the USA is expected to survive without Adams, his importance to the team was clearly shown during these matches. Berhalter didn’t exactly instruct one of the midfielders to play in Adams’ role, but that presence was missed at times.

The United States only has one camp between now and March – the latest Adams is expected back.

That comes next month for the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals, where the USMNT will play a two-legged fixture against Trinidad and Tobago.

First, the Americans will host T&T in Austin, Texas on November 16 before playing the second leg at a yet-to-be-determined location in the Caribbean nation on November 20.

Incidentially, these are must-win matches for the United States. They’ll need to reach the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League in order to play in the 2024 Copa America.

Despite being hosts of the tournament, CONMEBOL did not grant the United States an automatic invite – meaning they’ll have to get there on merit by winning this two-legged fixture.
