There were incredible scenes at Anfield on Sunday and a final game that won’t be forgotten in a hurry, so it came as a shock to learn it almost wasn’t televised.
Sky suits left many perplexed when it came to their choice of fixtures to broadcast at the weekend. They had first pick and, understandably, went for the Champions League decider between Nottingham Forest and Chelsea and the jeopardy it involved.
You might have thought TNT, who had second pick, would have grasped at the chance to have Liverpool’s coronation but they, too, turned down the opportunity and wanted Manchester United versus Aston Villa, another fixture with Champions League implications.
There was opposition from some at Sky’s HQ in Osterley, west London, about being at Anfield, as they felt Newcastle against Everton was a better alternative. The title presentation ceremony would always have been shown, as there was a global feed for the event, but it was still a puzzling stance to adopt.
Liverpool were aware of the situation and it’s safe to say there was some bafflement when the original intentions became clear.

It is probably a good thing the campaign is over and there is an opportunity for a break at the moment because this thought process is the kind of thing that can put a strain on relationships
Yes, the outcome of the title race might have been decided four weeks earlier but that did not mean the visit of Crystal Palace was going to be some humdrum affair.
It is probably a good thing the campaign is over and there is an opportunity for a break because this thought process – ignoring a genuinely global story – is the kind of thing that can put a strain on relationships.
Wirtz the latest on Florian?
Liverpool are hopeful that Florian Wirtz will be their man in the next week or so.
The Germany superstar clearly wants the move and there is no hiding the fact the Premier League champions are mad about him in return. Rumours on Tuesday that a deal had fallen through were just that — baseless rumours.
After signing Wirtz in what would be a club-record deal, Liverpool will turn their attention to signing a No 9 and look set to sell Darwin Nunez to raise funds to do so.
Confidential reported in March that Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt had been closely monitored while there have also been links with Benjamin Sesko at RB Leipzig and Julian Alvarez at Atletico Madrid.

Why Liverpool pulled out of Cunha deal
Matheus Cunha won a host of admirers in the stands at Anfield when Wolves visited in the spring, playing at times like a one-man army.
It was the kind of performance that left many hoping he would figure on Liverpool’s summer recruitment drive and there is no doubt, with his talent and power, he has not reached his full potential.
The fact he is heading to Manchester United, though, should not cause sleepless nights or give the sense that Liverpool have missed out on a jewel. Liverpool were certainly interested in the Brazilian and considered at one stage getting involved in the conversations about his future.
But they chose to step away as they are well stocked in that area and they were not 100 per cent convinced about where and how he would fit into the squad. Also, the record-breaking pursuit of Florian Wirtz has become the No 1 priority.
This would not be the first time that a much-discussed target among fans has not come to Merseyside despite the fact a move would have been popular.
Julian Draxler, for one, could have joined Jurgen Klopp’s revolution but the moment he asked about money before football, the game was up.
This, to be clear, was never about Cunha making big financial demands – it never reached that stage.
Many stars have to align for someone to flourish at Anfield and it was not the case with Cunha. It will now be up to Ruben Amorim to polish this diamond.

Interest in star wingers
Confidential reported last week how the Barcelona interest in Luis Diaz is real and the Spanish champions have the Colombian on their radar alongside Nico Williams this summer.
And it can be revealed another winger is attracting interest from a European juggernaut. Bayern Munich are keeping tabs on Cody Gakpo ahead of a potential summer move.
The German giants also like Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma and there is zero indication that Liverpool would want to sell Gakpo — or Diaz for that matter — this summer.
But it is interesting that two European heavyweights are monitoring their situations.

Gravenberch to miss first league game
A bit of confusion after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on the final day.
The Dutchman, who won Premier League young player of the season, had a stellar campaign but made a rare mistake and was shown a red card in the last game of a superb year.

Having checked with the FA and Premier League, Confidential can confirm that the suspension will be for the league and not count the Community Shield
A few people suggested that he would miss the Community Shield, also against Oliver Glasner’s Eagles, and therefore be available to play the first match of Liverpool’s Premier League title defence.
But having checked with the FA and Premier League, Confidential can confirm that the suspension will be in the league and not for the Wembley curtain-raiser.
A blow for Arne Slot three months before the season kicks off.
It’ll be back before you know it
Liverpool’s stars have just 41 days between now and their first training session of 2025-26, which is on Tuesday July 8.
That is not long at all, really, though it is long enough for the Premier League champions to put their feet up, enjoy some family time and have a well-deserved period of switching off.
But do not forget there is a full fixture list for internationals next week, with most players joining up with their countries at the end of this week.
Slot and Co fly to Hong Kong on July 21 for a training camp and then a friendly against AC Milan before another game against Yokohama F Marinos – owned by the City Football Group – in Japan the next week.
The travelling squad will contain far more senior players than last year. Due to the European Championship and Copa America last summer, the number of key men missing reached double figures.

Liverpool poach Spurs scout
Liverpool have poached Tottenham’s Tika Musonda, who joins the Reds as a global talent scout after three and a half years at Spurs and two at Chelsea.
The brother of former Chelsea youth star Charly, Musonda completed a Master’s degree in sport business and leadership, writing a paper on the challenges, complexities and cognitive biases that scouts face in the Premier League.
Visually-impaired fans given boost
One gentleman at Anfield on Sunday was wearing a special virtual-reality headset that allowed him to witness the Premier League trophy lift in all its spectacular glory.
GiveVision is a not-for-dividend company set up to develop assistive technologies that can transform the lives of people with severe sight impairments, focusing especially on sports and entertainment to make events more inclusive and accessible for those with sight loss.
The individual was sitting in the Main Stand wearing a GiveVision headset that brings images closer to users’ eyes, can zoom in or out and enhance the picture.
When Mohamed Salah equalised for Liverpool, he jumped up and celebrated like any other fan.

How Liverpool partied on Sunday

Once Liverpool had lifted the Premier League trophy on Sunday, an after party was arranged for the players and their families at the Municipal Hotel on Dale Street

On Saturday evening, a special dinner was arranged at The Ivy in Liverpool with John Henry, Tom Werner, Mike Gordon, Jurgen Klopp and Ian Rush all present
Up until the horrific events of Monday evening when a car ploughed into dozens of Liverpool fans, this was a Bank Holiday weekend of celebration for Liverpool.
On Saturday night, a special dinner was arranged at The Ivy in Liverpool with John Henry, Tom Werner, Mike Gordon, Jurgen Klopp and Ian Rush all present.
Then once Liverpool had lifted the Premier League trophy on Sunday, an after party was arranged for the players and their families at the Municipal Hotel on Dale Street, just yards from where the shocking incident would took place.
It went on past midnight with Curtis Jones one of the starring acts as he delivered a ‘Central Cee’ impersonation on stage with mic in hand, his cap on backwards and his Premier League medal around his neck.
