Liverpool returned to the summit of the Premier League on Saturday, beating a spirited Burnley side 3-1 at Anfield.

Two headers cancelled one another out in the first half at Anfield, Diogo Jota putting the Reds in front before Dara O’Shea equalised from a corner at the other end just before the break.

Luis Diaz netted shortly after the break to put Liverpool back in front, with Darwin Nunez securing the points with ten minutes to play after a fourth header of the game gave the Reds a two-goal cushion.

There was plenty of pressure on Liverpool to perform against struggling Burnley, the Reds needing to bounce back from a disappointing defeat at Arsenal last weekend and avoid another slip-up following Manchester City’s victory earlier in the day.

It looked as if the nerves may have gotten the better of Liverpool in the early stages, with Burnley the more promising side in the opening half-an-hour.

However, despite an underwhelming start, Liverpool did eventually grab the lead with their first real attempt on goal, Jota converting Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross – the 25-year-old becoming the defender with the most assists in Premier League history in the process.

But the Reds would be pegged back just before half-time to raise pulses inside Anfield, O’Shea producing a fantastic header to equalise for the Clarets minutes before the half-time whistle.

It was a deserved equaliser for Vincent Kompany’s side, who had been brilliant in the opening 45 minutes.

Liverpool were already facing a challenging second half against a spirited Burnley side and matters weren’t helped by Alexander-Arnold’s half-time substitution.

Given his impressive display in the opening stages, there were fears that the defender had picked up an injury in the first-half.

It didn’t take Liverpool long to regain their advantage after the break, Luis Diaz netting a third header of the match at the near post.

After a long VAR check for offside and a potential foul in the build-up, the goal was eventually given.

David Datro Fofana proved the guilty party at the other end, however, squandering two massive opportunities to draw Burnley level.

After an impressive cameo last week in which he bagged a brace off the bench against Fulham, the Chelsea loanee didn’t end up enjoying his first start for the Clarets.

And Liverpool eventually made the Ivorian pay, with Nunez heading home a third that secured all three points for the Reds.

It wasn’t a great display from Jurgen Klopp’s men, but they leapfrog Man City in the Premier League table for the time being.
