Video shows LA homeless living in sewers

Los Angeles has reached a distressing point in its homelessness crisis, as some residents are now resorting to living in storm drains.

In a stark reflection of the city’s escalating issue, individuals have been discovered inhabiting the sewers of South LA. According to a report from Fox 11, the conditions inside these sewers are dire, with overwhelming amounts of trash, human waste, and unbearable odors confronting those who venture there.

Disturbingly, one woman was observed emerging from a drain, which had been discreetly covered by a dog house to conceal the entrance.

Juan Naula, the founder of the nonprofit Clean LA With Me, which focuses on cleaning up trash in Los Angeles, expressed disbelief at the situation. During a cleanup on Monday, he witnessed two people coming out of the sewers.

“It’s unimaginable to think of someone living in such conditions,” Naula told Fox 11. “It’s a life worse than that of a rat.”

“A person living like a rat — worse than a rat,” he told Fox 11.

Naula said he has come across people living in storm drains before, and called the city to fix the problem.

“Are you kidding me? It’s a human being. Why are we accepting this?” he said. “All the officials — they have to do something. This person doesn’t deserve to live like this.”

Neighbor Latoia Thomas reiterated that action needed to be taken.

“It pisses me off … we need your help,” she told Fox 11. “The public here needs that.”

In a statement to the outlet, a spokesperson for LA Mayor Karen Bass called the situation “tragic and unacceptable” while noting that homelessness has dropped 17% on the mayor’s watch.

The city promised to clean the inhabited storm drains up on Tuesday.

“What we saw there is hard to forget,” FOX 11’s Matthew Seedorff reported.
