Trump 15% global tariff: President Donald Trump wants to impose 15% tariff, up from 10% he announced after Supreme Court ruling

WASHINGTON — In a notable policy shift, President Donald Trump announced on Saturday his intent to increase the global tariff from the originally proposed 10% to 15%. This decision comes only a day after his initial announcement.

The President communicated his decision via social media, citing a “thorough, detailed, and complete review” of what he described as a “ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American decision on tariffs” rendered by the U.S. Supreme Court.

After the court’s ruling, which restricted his emergency powers to impose broad tariffs, Trump took action by signing an executive order late Friday. This order allows him to bypass Congress and impose a 10% tax on global imports. However, these tariffs are temporary, with a lifespan of 150 days unless extended by legislative means.

Trump’s latest announcement to escalate import taxes underscores his determination to continue using tariffs as a strategic economic tool, despite judicial checks on his powers. His unpredictable tariff policy over the past year has frequently unsettled markets and strained international relations, with abrupt changes in tariff rates causing widespread uncertainty.

According to the executive order signed on Friday, the 10% tariff was slated to begin on February 24. As of now, the White House has not responded to requests for clarification on when the updated 15% tariff order will be signed.

In addition to the temporary increase to 15%, Trump indicated on Friday that he is also exploring other tariff options under federal law, which would necessitate an investigation by the Commerce Department.
