Middle East war delays D8 summit in Jakarta, Indonesian foreign ministry says

A scheduled summit of eight leading Muslim developing nations, including Iran, planned for Jakarta next month, has been postponed due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, a spokesperson from Indonesia’s foreign ministry announced on Friday.

The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, which comprises Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, was founded in 1997 to bolster collaboration among these countries, which span from Southeast Asia to Africa.

Senior foreign ministry official Tri Tharyat informed journalists that a new date for the meeting has not yet been determined.

The summit was initially planned for April 13 to 15.

The conflict intensified on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. In retaliation, Iran targeted Israel and Gulf nations hosting US military bases.

Egypt was the host of the most recent D-8 summit in 2024.
