CHICAGO (WLS) — A retired priest of the Chicago-area is being reinstated to the church after being accused of sexually abusing a minor.

The claims against Monsignor Daniel Mayall surfaced in February 2025. During this period, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich declared that Mayall would step back from ministry and educational involvement while an investigation took place.

Six months after the letter, Cupich announced that Mayall would be reinstated.

“He strongly contested the allegation but fully agreed to my directive and participated in the inquiry,” Cupich noted in the letter. “Following the thorough investigation, the Independent Review Board (IRB) concluded that there isn’t sufficient cause to suspect Monsignor Mayall of sexual misconduct towards the complainant. Furthermore, the IRB suggested that Monsignor Mayall be reinstated to his ministry. I have accepted their suggestion effective immediately.”

Mayall faced accusations of sexually abusing a minor during his tenure at St. Francis Borgia Parish about 30 years ago, according to the Archdiocese. He held the role of the parish pastor from July 1993 until January 2002, as detailed in a letter addressed to the parish.

“We urge anyone who believes they have been sexually abused by clergy, religious, or lay staff to come forward. They will be treated with dignity and compassion,” Cupich stated.
