BUDAPEST – In a move that stands out amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is making a noteworthy visit to Moscow for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin about energy. This marks an uncommon initiative by a European leader during these tense times.

Orbán, who is often regarded as the European Union leader closest to Putin, embarks on this journey to Moscow for the second time since last year. Prior to his departure early Friday, he communicated to state media that the primary agenda of his meeting would center around ensuring Hungary’s access to Russian oil and gas, resources that have been targeted by U.S. sanctions.

Despite the EU’s general movement away from Russian energy, Hungary continues to be a significant consumer of Russian fossil fuels. The country has consistently opposed the EU’s efforts to reduce dependency on these supplies, further emphasizing its unique position within the bloc.
