The moment has finally arrived: Silksong, the independent follow-up to Hollow Knight, now has a release date. Seven years in the making, largely in secrecy, the game will launch on September 4th. This announcement delights the vast community of Hollow Knight enthusiasts who have been eagerly awaiting this news. It also aligns with a favorable pattern: 2025 is proving to be the year when many long-anticipated games are finally unveiled.

While both Routine and Metroid Prime 4 encountered the typical technical and design hurdles that often stall large-scale game productions—Nintendo’s senior managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi described Metroid’s development as “very challenged”—such struggles did not plague Silksong. Instead, it’s a project undertaken by a small team that could afford a measured pace. “It was never stuck or anything,” said Team Cherry co-founder Ari Gibson to Bloomberg. “It was always progressing. It’s just the case that we’re a small team, and games take a lot of time. There wasn’t any big controversial moment behind it.”

However, another extensively awaited title originally meant for a 2025 release has been rescheduled: Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar unveiled the first trailer at the close of 2023, marking a decade since GTAV, and had initially eyed an autumn release this year. The launch is now postponed to May 26th, 2026, prolonging the wait for fans.

Nonetheless, even without the giant presence of Grand Theft Auto, this year promises to fulfill the desires of fans awaiting particular games. Notably, the latest installments of Deltarune might also make the list. The real question remains: with so many anticipated releases happening, what will gamers fixate on next? Is the Beyond Good & Evil sequel truly still in the works? When will the creator of Stardew Valley unveil Haunted Chocolatier? Will there be a remake for Knights of the Old Republic or even for Bloodborne? And what about the next Elder Scrolls or the elusive Half-Life 3? Here’s hoping for more exciting announcements in 2026.
