Amazon is ending support for older Kindles and Kindle Fires

Amazon has unveiled a significant update affecting Kindle users: effective May 20, 2026, e-readers and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier will no longer have the capability to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store. Jackie Burke, an Amazon spokesperson, conveyed this change in an email to The Verge. Despite this limitation, owners of these older devices can still enjoy their currently downloaded books and manage their accounts through the Kindle mobile app, Kindle for Web, and more recent devices. However, if these legacy devices are deregistered or reset to factory settings, they will not be eligible for re-registration after the deadline.

The list of affected devices stretches back to the original Kindle, which debuted in 2007, featuring a distinctive full keyboard and scroll wheel.

In preparation for this transition, Amazon plans to email notifications to impacted users prior to May 20. These communications will detail the functionalities that will remain available on their older devices. While Kindle Fire devices released before 2012 will face the same restrictions regarding book access, other apps and Amazon services on these tablets will remain functional.

For those considering an upgrade, Amazon is extending a special offer: a 20 percent discount on new Kindle devices coupled with a $20 ebook credit. This offer will be available until June 20, 2026, at 11:59 PM PT. Once upgraded, users can seamlessly access their existing library on new Kindle devices by logging into their longstanding accounts, ensuring their digital collections are preserved.
