Apple’s TechWoven cases are fine

As the nation’s foremost FineWoven critic, I have some positive news about Apple’s successor: it’s a hit. I’ve been trying out a TechWoven case on an iPhone 17 Pro for the past week and have encountered zero issues. I took it hiking up a mountain, slipped it in the sweaty back pocket of my yoga pants during a bike ride, placed it next to my keys, let my toddler handle it, and used it while making banana bread. It performs well, and “fine” in this context is quite satisfactory.

Remember FineWoven? Apple debuted this material back in 2023 when it phased out its leather cases and accessories — for valid reasons. Apple’s “microtwill,” which they claimed was significantly more environmentally friendly than leather, did away with the greenhouse gas emissions associated with cows. They touted FineWoven as “luxurious and durable,” yet it failed to live up to these promises; it scratched easily and aged poorly. Consequently, Apple followed its typical protocol for flops: quietly phasing it out and acting like it never existed.

FineWoven seems only partially retired, since a bright orange FineWoven MagSafe wallet that came with this year’s iPhone review units is sitting on my desk. However, when it comes to cases, FineWoven has been phased out in favor of TechWoven. The new TechWoven case for the iPhone 17 Pro costs $59, like its predecessor, but it’s less silky, more rugged, and far less prone to scratching. As per Apple, it’s constructed from 100 percent recycled polyester, creating a “dimensional texture with rich color depth.” Others might call it “bumpy” and “kind of cool under close inspection.” Most importantly, your house keys don’t easily mar it. I had to dig pretty hard with my fingernail to leave any mark, and even that buffed out without any lasting effect.

It’s not what I would describe as an elegant case. But as the name suggests, this is a tech case for technical users, not one for showy types. It’s available only for the 17 Pro, not the regular 17 or the Air. It seems to match the 17 Pro’s new practical style, moving away from the glossy status symbol image of recent years. If you want a posh-looking phone, go for an Air. If you’re looking to harness the raw power of three rear cameras and a battery that genuinely lasts all day, then the Pro is your choice. The TechWoven might give your device a Ninja Turtle vibe, but it appears it can endure the journey.
