You can play classic Nintendo games on these custom SNES Nike sneakers

In a tribute to the Super Nintendo’s 35th anniversary since its debut in Japan, where it was known as the Super Famicom, designer Gustavo Bonzanini has crafted a unique blend of ’90s style and gaming technology. These AIR SNES sneakers are a highly modified version of the Nike Air Max 90, inspired by other gaming-themed footwear like Bull Airs’ ShoeBoys. Remarkably, Bonzanini’s design also functions as a vintage gaming console.

Recognizing the bulkiness of the original Super Nintendo and its sizable cartridges, Bonzanini decided against compressing the hardware to fit into a wearable shoe. Instead, they opted for emulation, utilizing a compact Raspberry Pi Zero W. This small but powerful computer is capable of running 16-bit SNES games through a customized RetroPie emulator that visually aligns with the sneaker’s design.

Contrary to expectations, the microcomputer isn’t tucked away in the sole but is cleverly housed within the Air Max 90’s tongue. All necessary electronics, including a battery capable of providing 30 minutes of gaming time, are compactly integrated there. While the Raspberry Pi Zero W has a Mini HDMI port, Bonzanini added a tiny analog converter to maintain a nostalgic 1990s vibe, allowing the AIR SNES to connect to a TV using old-school RCA cables.

The sneakers can even pair with an original SNES gamepad. To minimize tangled cables, Bonzanini enhanced the controller with an 8BitDo Mod Kit, enabling a wireless Bluetooth connection to the Raspberry Pi. With retro gaming and sneaker culture on the rise, Bonzanini’s creation could easily find a market. However, this innovative design remains a singular piece with no current plans for mass production.
