More than 450 game developers at Blizzard working on the Diablo series have established a union, marking them as one of the largest and most recent groups of workers at Microsoft to do so. This newly formed union comprises game developers, artists, designers, engineers, and support personnel across the Diablo series, according to a press release from the Communications Workers of America (CWA), which reported a strong vote in favor of CWA representation.

The Diablo team aims to enhance their compensation, job security, and workplace conditions under Microsoft’s ownership. Currently, over 3,500 Microsoft employees have joined CWA unions, including more than 500 World of Warcraft developers who initiated Blizzard’s inaugural company-wide union last year. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced layoffs affecting up to 9,100 employees, with an additional 1,900 jobs cut at Activision Blizzard and Xbox in 2024.

“With every new wave of mass layoffs, I’ve noticed a growing fear among my coworkers because it seems that no amount of effort can ensure our safety,” remarked Kelly Yeo, a member of the organizing committee for the Diablo union. “This marks just the beginning of us joining a movement that’s gaining momentum within an industry that is weary of living in fear.”
