Elon Musk has declared that he canceled his Netflix account and is advising others to do likewise due to the inclusion of transgender characters in certain series that premiered years ago. Earlier this week, Musk reposted a message on X criticizing Dead End: Paranormal Park, a children’s animated show that features a transgender lead character.
“This is not okay,” Musk commented in a post targeting the show. He also shared a graphic suggesting Netflix promotes a “transgender woke agenda,” urging, “Cancel Netflix for your kids’ well-being.” The show Dead End: Paranormal Park launched on Netflix in 2022 but was discontinued in 2023.
Since then, Musk has continued to fuel the right-wing uproar, pushing followers to unsubscribe from Netflix over shows like The Baby-Sitters Club, featuring trans characters, which ended after two seasons in 2022. He also reacted to a critique of a 2023 CoComelon Lane episode where a child dresses in a tutu and tiara, stating, “Super messed up for a kids’ show!”
Conservative influencers have increased their condemnation of diversity in entertainment, with criticism directed at Netflix for featuring more diverse lead roles and directors. Simultaneously, the Trump administration has branded diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) initiatives as “illegal” and prohibited gender-affirmative care for minors. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has also criticized Netflix, accusing it of spreading “woke Democrat gender ideology.”
Media organizations are facing intensified scrutiny from the administration where Musk was previously involved. Brendan Carr, the head of the Federal Communications Commission, has pressured companies to discard DEI policies and influenced decisions like Disney’s pause on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Though the FCC has limited direct influence over streaming platforms like Netflix, backlash from conservative figures like Musk significantly affects their operations.
