Initially, the choice by Universal to divide Wicked’s plot into two separate films seemed questionable. However, the latest trailer for Wicked: For Good suggests that the studio is skillfully managing the adaptation.
While the trailer for Wicked: For Good bursts with vivid colors and lively songs, there’s a shadowy undertone that highlights the aftermath of the first film. Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) has earned the reputation of the Wicked Witch of the West, with the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) persuading all of Oz that she poses a real threat.
As Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) orchestrates her own chaos throughout Oz and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) spearheads the search for Elphaba, the public perceives her as a menace. Nonetheless, the trailer makes it clear that Glinda (Ariana Grande) is not swayed by the widespread negative narratives about her dear friend.
The trailer makes Wicked, part two, seem like it’s going to have no trouble standing on its own with a distinct tone and powerful renditions of the original musical’s second act songs. And when the movie hits theaters on November 21st, it’s probably going to set off a new wave of sing-alongs that we should all start getting ready for.
