Gears of War: E-Day is coming in 2026

During last year’s Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft unveiled Gears of War: E-Day, and in today’s event, they have announced a 2026 release timeframe for the newest installment in the iconic sci-fi shooter franchise. Created by The Coalition, E-Day is set to launch in a year that commemorates the 20th anniversary of the original Gears of War released on the Xbox 360 and celebrates 25 years of Xbox.

E-Day occurs 14 years prior to the initial Gears installment and explores the narrative of the first Locust uprising on Sera. Positioned as an origin story, it features the return of Marcus Fenix. This marks the first game in the franchise since the release of Gears 5 in 2019.

Last month, Microsoft disclosed plans for a Gears of War remaster that introduces the series to PlayStation users for the first time. Titled Gears of War: Reloaded, the remaster is set to launch on August 26th for Xbox Series X / S, PlayStation, and PC at a price of $39.99. This updated version boasts 4K resolution, 120fps capabilities, and features cross-progression and cross-play across all platforms. Additionally, Gears of War: Reloaded will offer two-player co-op for its campaign and multiplayer support for up to eight players.

Xbox chief Phil Spencer confirmed the E-Day release window during the Xbox Games Showcase earlier today, and also revealed “the next Forza” is coming in 2026 too, as well as “the return of a classic that’s been with us since the beginning.” That classic may well be the Halo CE remaster I wrote about last year.
