Google is reportedly nearing an agreement with Apple to incorporate Gemini into the iPhone. During a legal trial concerning search engine dominance, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the company anticipates finalizing a Gemini agreement with Apple by mid-year, with plans to implement it by the end of 2025.

This collaboration could potentially enable Siri to leverage Gemini for handling more intricate inquiries, mirroring Apple’s previous integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Last June, Apple’s senior vice president Craig Federighi hinted at incorporating Gemini into the Apple Intelligence feature when the AI service was introduced. Federighi mentioned, “We aim to allow users to ultimately select their preferred models, possibly even Google Gemini in the future.”

The latest update was provided in response to queries from Department of Justice lawyer Veronica Onyema. Pichai affirmed the plans by saying “Correct” and shared that he had discussions with Apple CEO Tim Cook regarding AI advancements. “He [Cook] was seeking to understand our AI technology evolution, our roadmap, and we also talked about the Gemini app’s distribution,” explained Pichai. He further mentioned that Cook informed him about the integration of more third-party AI models into Apple Intelligence later this year.

There are other signs that this integration is on the way. In February, MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris found references to “Google” as an Apple Intelligence model choice in an iOS 18.4 beta. With Apple’s ChatGPT integration, Siri automatically asks for permission to use the third-party AI model to answer more complex questions. ChatGPT can also analyze photos and generate images based on text.
