Google Docs has introduced a new feature that allows users to create an audio version of their documents using AI. Google’s announcement states that users can personalize the AI audio playback by selecting different voices and adjusting the playback speeds.

This capability extends beyond just the document’s author. Google mentions that anyone with access to a shared document can listen to its AI-generated audio by navigating to the Tool menu and selecting Audio > Listen to this tab. Document creators also have the option to embed an audio button within the document by choosing Insert > Audio, enabling readers to begin listening with a single click.

Earlier in April, Google revealed its intentions to allow document-to-AI podcast conversions, but this current feature seems more practical for users who simply wish to listen to their writings. At present, the audio feature is only available for documents in English and can be accessed via desktop devices.

The audio feature in Docs is being made available to Workspace users with business, enterprise, or education plans, along with those holding AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions.
