Google is rolling out a fix for Pixel back button issues

Google’s August Pixel update includes a fix for Android’s three-button navigation and gesture navigation systems becoming unresponsive.

Problems began surfacing soon after the Android 16 official launch in June. Following the update, one user reported that navigation turned into “a complete mess,” encountering issues with buttons being “utterly unresponsive” or experiencing delays of “over 30 seconds” on their Pixel 8 Pro. Another user mentioned needing to press the back button “multiple times” on their Pixel 9 for it to respond. The swipe gesture to navigate back also occasionally malfunctioned, according to Android Police’s Artem Russakovskii.

Google’s patch notes vaguely mention that the issues occurred under “certain conditions.” Along with enhancing general stability, the update addresses a glitch where a scheduled dark theme wouldn’t function. It also provides a security fix for a high-severity remote code execution vulnerability.

The update is rolling out now for Pixel 6 devices and newer.
