Google’s Gemini AI will get more personalized by remembering details automatically

Google is launching a new update for Gemini that allows the AI chatbot to remember your previous interactions without needing a prompt. When this feature is enabled, Gemini will automatically retain your key details and preferences to tailor its responses more personally.

This enhances a previous update introduced by Google, which permitted users to instruct Gemini to remember their personal interests and preferences. Now, Gemini will proactively recall this information. For instance, if you’ve previously asked Gemini for ideas on a YouTube channel about Japanese culture, it may now suggest exploring Japanese cuisine if you request new video ideas in the future.

Addressing concerns about this feature, Google spokesperson Elijah Lawal mentioned, “We are always working to enhance our security measures. Our objective has been to create a personal AI assistant, and having Gemini understand your preferences is vital for this purpose,” Lawal explained. “Equally important is providing you with simple control options, allowing you to activate or deactivate this feature whenever you choose.”

By default, this ability will be switched on, but you can deactivate it via the settings in the Gemini app under Personal Context. From there, simply turn off the Your past chats with Gemini option. The feature will initially be introduced to the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in certain countries today, with plans to expand it to other locations and the Gemini 2.5 Flash model in the future.

Google is also updating its privacy settings. Soon, Google will rename the existing “Gemini Apps Activity” to “Keep Activity.” When activated, Google will use a sample of your uploaded files and photos to Gemini to enhance its services starting September 2nd, as mentioned in its blog. This setting is deactivated by default, and Google confirms that the “Keep Activity” will stay off if the “Gemini Apps Activity” was previously turned off.

You have the option to protect your privacy further with a new “temporary chats” feature in Gemini. These chats will not appear in your recent history or Keep Activity, nor will they be used for personalizing future interactions or training Google’s AI models. These conversations are retained for just 72 hours. This feature is useful for exploring sensitive topics or preventing Gemini from referring to the conversation in the future.
