Jeff Bezos is stepping into a fresh role as co-CEO of an exciting new venture called Project Prometheus. This startup, which he is partly financing, remains somewhat shrouded in mystery, but its mission is clear: to leverage artificial intelligence to revolutionize manufacturing sectors such as computing, automotive, and aerospace industries.
According to The New York Times, Project Prometheus has quickly become one of the most well-funded early-stage startups globally, boasting a staggering $6.2 billion in investments. Bezos isn’t just investing his capital; he’s also joining forces with co-founder Vik Bajaj to help steer the company. Bajaj, a physicist and chemist, has a rich background, having worked at Google X—the famed “moonshot factory”—and later leading Verily, a health tech company under Alphabet’s umbrella.
Already, Project Prometheus has attracted a team of nearly 100 employees, including talent from notable tech giants like OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta. This marks Bezos’s first hands-on operational role since he stepped down as Amazon’s CEO in 2021. Since then, he’s been deeply engaged with Blue Origin, his space exploration venture, which recently celebrated the successful landing of its New Glenn booster. With Bezos now on board, the future of Project Prometheus looks poised for significant strides in the AI-driven transformation of manufacturing.
