OpenAI is on the lookout for a new Head of Preparedness, a role focused on anticipating and mitigating potential risks associated with AI technologies. Announcing the position on X, CEO Sam Altman highlighted the growing concerns tied to the rapid advancement of AI models, citing challenges such as mental health impacts and the threat of AI-enhanced cybersecurity attacks.
The job description outlines several key responsibilities for this critical position.
Altman further elaborated that the new hire will lead the implementation of the company’s “preparedness framework.” This involves ensuring AI models are safely deployed, particularly as they gain new “biological capabilities,” and establishing safety measures for systems capable of self-improvement. He candidly noted the role’s high-pressure nature, suggesting that the challenges ahead are significant.
Altman also says that, looking forward, this person would be responsible for executing the company’s “preparedness framework,” securing AI models for the release of “biological capabilities,” and even setting guardrails for self-improving systems. He also states that it will be a “stressful job,” which seems like an understatement.
