Mel Brooks is returning for Spaceballs 2

Spaceballs, which was first released nearly 40 years ago, is getting a sequel in 2027 from Amazon MGM Studios.

A teaser trailer for Spaceballs 2 released on Thursday doesn’t reveal much beyond its release date but humorously critiques the entertainment industry’s love for franchises and spinoffs by listing many in jest. (I especially enjoyed the mentions of “DCU attempt Number 1” and “DCU attempt Number 2.”)

Mel Brooks, who played the Yoda-like character Yogurt in the original movie, also appears in the trailer. He quips, “After 40 years, we asked, ‘what do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie.” According to Variety, the movie is described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Brooks will reprise his role as Yogurt, with Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis returning as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, as noted by Deadline. The film will also feature Lewis Pullman (Bill Pullman’s son), Josh Gad, and Keke Palmer.
