Users of Windows can now breathe a sigh of relief, as Microsoft has introduced a new feature to prevent automatic updates from interrupting crucial moments, such as gaming or work. The tech giant is implementing improvements to Windows Update for those enrolled in its Dev and Experimental Windows Insider channels, allowing updates to be postponed indefinitely for up to 35 days at a time.
In a recent announcement, Microsoft outlined several enhancements aimed at refining Windows 11 and addressing prevalent user concerns. One of the standout modifications is the effort to make updates less intrusive. In a blog post released on Friday, Microsoft highlighted that users will have the flexibility to “extend the pause end date as many times as necessary,” without any restrictions on how often the 35-day pause can be reset. If updates are not paused again at the end of this period, they will proceed as normal.
Another update to the Windows Update system involves providing more descriptive titles for driver updates. These titles will now specify the device category they pertain to, such as display, audio, or battery, offering users clearer information.
Furthermore, Windows 11 will consistently offer options in the power menu for restarting or shutting down without triggering updates. This also includes an option to bypass updates during the initial setup of a new Windows device. Microsoft is working towards a more streamlined update process by consolidating updates, which means users won’t need to reboot as frequently. Updates will be downloaded in the background and will await a synchronized installation and restart.
