In a strategic move to expand its gaming portfolio, Netflix has announced the acquisition of Ready Player Me, a company known for its innovative avatar technology. This acquisition aims to enhance Netflix’s gaming experience by allowing users to create personalized avatars, which can be used across various games, according to Timmu Tõke, CEO of Ready Player Me.
While Netflix has yet to specify a timeline for when these avatars will be available or identify the initial games that will incorporate them, the company remains tight-lipped about the financial details of the acquisition, as reported by TechCrunch.
The integration will see Ready Player Me’s team of approximately 20 employees transition to Netflix. However, the company has announced that its avatar services, currently utilized by thousands of developers, will be discontinued on January 31, 2026, as noted on their official website.
Tõke expressed his enthusiasm about the merger, stating, “Our goal has always been to enable avatars and identities to seamlessly move across different games and virtual environments. We’ve independently worked towards realizing this vision for a considerable time. Joining Netflix offers an exciting opportunity to leverage our technology on a global scale, aligning with Netflix’s ambitious vision for the future of gaming.”
