An update to the Philips Hue app released this week accidentally revealed a new product, the Hue Secure video doorbell, according to a report by Hueblog. The undisclosed device made an appearance in a section of the app that provides guidance for adding devices without a QR code.
Based on screenshots captured within the iOS Hue app by Jennifer Pattison Tuohy, the Hue Secure doorbell seems to be a simple video doorbell design, featuring a tall rectangular shape with a large button enclosed within an LED circle. As of now, the app still displays this unreleased product on her phone.
Although the instructions only provided limited information before reaching a dead end, some details can still be deduced. It appears that the doorbell may require a wired connection, indicated by references to low-voltage issues and the necessity to physically install the camera prior to setup. Additionally, the device utilizes both Bluetooth, for initial configuration, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Hueblog writes that the camera isn’t expected to launch until this fall, so it could be a while before pricing or camera specs are available. The best way to set your expectations is probably to look at Hue’s other Secure cameras, such as the floodlight and indoor / outdoor options launched in 2023. They each offer 1080p video, two-way talk, and end-to-end encryption of recordings, as well as smart alerts for people, pets, and vehicles. They also don’t support HomeKit Secure Video, and I wouldn’t expect that to change with this device.
