Industry insider Gurman has long speculated that a significant overhaul of the MacBook Pro would bring touchscreens, OLED displays, and a sleeker, more lightweight design. Recently, he noted that while these plans remain, their introduction has been postponed from late 2025 due to OLED supply constraints. Today, he elaborated on these rumors, sharing codenames K114 and K116 alongside other specifications.
Despite the prevalence of touchscreens on Windows laptops, Apple has historically shied away from this feature, opting instead for the now-phased-out Touch Bar until 2021. The latest reports also hint at another potential shift towards Face ID authentication, a common feature on Windows devices, though it may be some time before this reaches Macs.
Before these innovations, Gurman predicts the release of M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models with the existing design, expected early next year. Similarly, refreshed versions of the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, Mac Mini, and two monitors are anticipated to debut.
Gurman suggests that forthcoming MacBook Pros will boast M6 series Apple processors, a hole-punch style integrated webcam akin to the iPhone’s Dynamic Island, and sturdier hinges designed to remain stable during touchscreen use.
However, these advancements are likely to come with a price hike, adding “a few hundred dollars” to the cost. Initially, these upgrades may not extend to Apple’s more affordable laptop offerings.
