Nintendo blocks some third-party Switch 2 docks, but isn’t saying why

Nintendo has rolled out an update (21.0.0) for its Switch 2 console, introducing minor tweaks but inadvertently causing some third-party docks to malfunction. In the initial months following the console’s release this past summer, manufacturers scrambled to figure out the precise commands, power requirements, and components needed to mimic Nintendo’s official dock, which accompanies every console. Now, with the latest update, some third-party developers are back to square one.

Speculation abounds that Nintendo’s actions were deliberate. However, was it intentional? According to a statement shared with gaming site Kotaku, Nintendo asserts it had “no intention to hinder or invalidate legal third-party dock compatibility.” This statement could be interpreted in two ways: either Nintendo did not foresee these compatibility issues, or it has delineated between legal and illegal third-party docks, suggesting many on the market might not comply with their standards.

The lack of detailed clarification from Nintendo leaves the future uncertain. Will more third-party docks face compatibility issues? Is Nintendo altering its proprietary docking protocol to keep third-party developers on their toes? Could Nintendo be planning to introduce a certification program similar to Apple’s MFi, allowing companies to guarantee compatibility for a fee?

Regardless of the answers, Nintendo seemingly aims to steer consumers toward its own premium dock, discouraging third-party competition. This creates an intriguing scenario for third-party developers, such as Genki and JSAUX, who are set to release compact, power adapter-sized docks later this year. While Switch 2 compatibility is currently a key feature for these products, it remains to be seen if this will hold true as their launch dates approach.
