The newest updates to OpenAI’s multimodal GPT AI models are now being implemented in ChatGPT. On Wednesday, OpenAI revealed that GPT-4.1 is being made accessible to all paid ChatGPT account levels and can be selected by Plus, Pro, or Team users through the model picker dropdown menu. Free users will not receive this update immediately, but OpenAI assures that Enterprise and Edu users will gain access “in the coming weeks.”

Last year’s more budget-friendly and efficiency-driven model, GPT-4o mini, is being substituted by GPT-4.1 mini as the default choice in ChatGPT for everyone, including those with free accounts. Paid account holders will also find GPT-4o mini replaced by GPT-4.1 mini within the model picker selections.

OpenAI claims that both GPT-4.1 and GPT‑4.1 mini excel in programming tasks and instruction adherence, significantly surpassing GPT‑4o and GPT‑4o mini in all areas. The new models boast a one million context token capacity — the volume of text, images, or videos in a prompt an AI model can handle — far exceeding the previous GPT-4o’s 128,000-token limit. OpenAI states that enhancements in speed make GPT-4.1 more attractive for regular coding activities compared to the robust OpenAI o3 & o4-mini reasoning models unveiled in April.

GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini were made available to developers last month, alongside the GPT-4.1 nano model, which OpenAI described as its “smallest, fastest, and cheapest” offering to date. GPT-4.1 Nano is absent from this model rollout announcement, and it’s unclear when — or if — it’ll be generally available in ChatGPT.
