In a bold nod to nostalgia, Bumpboxx has unveiled its new boombox model, the BB-777, echoing the iconic design of the Sharp GF-777. While vintage enthusiasts might pay over $2,000 for a functioning original GF-777, they won’t find modern features like Bluetooth connectivity or a rechargeable battery in those classic units. Notably, these originals also lack a CD player.
The BB-777 retains the essence of the GF-777 with its dual-cassette decks, traditional control layout, and speaker specifications prominently displayed above the subwoofers. With its sleek silver finish and comprehensive physical controls, the BB-777 is undeniably striking. Modern enhancements include a replaceable battery pack, Bluetooth capability, and an LCD screen. However, it does miss out on the analog VU meters, a feature that We Are Rewind successfully incorporated into its Blaster boombox.
The BB-777 comes equipped with six speakers: two Super Woofers with exclusive gain control, two coaxial speakers, and two horn tweeters, delivering a powerful total of 270W. This ensures that volume levels are more than adequate—perhaps even overwhelmingly so. The speakers are also ported to enhance bass performance.
Beyond its dual cassette decks, the BB-777 boasts a slot-loading CD player, AM/FM/shortwave radio, USB audio playback compatible with MP3, WMA, WAV, FLAC, and AAC formats, an auxiliary input complete with an RCA adapter, and Bluetooth connectivity. Impressively, it allows for direct recording to a USB drive from the tape decks, CDs, or radio, facilitating easy digitization and archiving. However, it does not support audio streaming over Wi-Fi.
The BB-777 features two microphone inputs on its front, which could be perfect for hosting a rap battle or emceeing a breakdancing contest in true retro style. Additionally, it includes two built-in microphones, a feature whose purpose might seem vague but could be useful for capturing spontaneous moments, like recording a child’s amusing quip on cassette.
While the BB-777 includes a handle for portability, its substantial 28-pound weight may prompt users to opt for the shoulder strap when transporting it over longer distances. Before hitting the market, Bumpboxx is launching the BB-777 on Kickstarter, where a pledge of $649 will secure one for early backers, with shipments anticipated in June. Once available in retail, the price will rise to $1,049.
