What if your real computer was a super-sized Lego computer brick?

Industrial designer Paul Staal has taken a creative leap with his latest project: a fully operational desktop PC that pays tribute to the iconic computer brick, scaled up to a massive size. This innovative creation has been showcased on platforms like Reddit and Hackster.io.

Remarkably, Staal’s creation is ten times the size of its classic inspiration.

Dubbed the “M2x2,” this project is more than just a shell for a Mac Mini; it’s a largely 3D-printed case that enthusiasts can replicate at home. The M2x2 is equipped with a 7-inch IPS touchscreen display and boasts a variety of additional ports and an SD card reader, all made possible by an integrated USB-C hub.

The oversized studs on the top of the device aren’t just for show. The left stud cleverly conceals an Ikea Symfonisk remote control, allowing Staal to manage his Sonos speaker. Meanwhile, the right stud hides a wireless charger for his AirPods. For a touch of nostalgia, both studs feature standard Lego-style connectors, perfect for attaching classic bricks or a minifigure.

The rear of the unit is equally practical, featuring a built-in handle for easy transport and cord hangers for tidy storage.

On his visually engaging website, Staal reveals that he uses the M2x2 as his main computer. While he primarily employs the built-in screen as a Home Assistant dashboard for smart home management, he connects it to an LG DualUp monitor for more intensive tasks.

If you’ve already got the Mac Mini, he estimates the rest should cost you less than €100 (roughly $116), and he has guided step-by-step assembly instructions at his site with excellent photos. Do note that the Ikea/Sonos Symfonisk products are discontinued, and the knob in particular is from an older generation of Ikea product. I still see some on eBay, but you might want a different knob solution.
