Google Translate has unveiled a new update that brings live speech translations to any headphones, expanding the feature beyond its initial availability on Pixel Buds. This enhancement, which supports over 70 languages, is being released as a beta version today. Users only need a compatible Android phone with the Translate app to access this feature, setting it apart from Apple’s similar offering that requires AirPods.

As part of this update, Google Translate is also introducing refined text translation capabilities. Leveraging the power of Gemini, the app now provides more precise translations for complex phrases, including idioms and slang that often differ significantly from their literal meanings. For instance, phrases like “stealing my thunder” can now be more accurately interpreted.

Moreover, the update broadens the reach of the Translate app’s Practice feature, extending its availability to 20 additional countries and supporting a wider array of languages. Originally launched in beta this past August, the Practice feature is akin to Duolingo but integrated directly into Google Translate. It uses artificial intelligence to tailor language learning sessions to individual skill levels, offering exercises in vocabulary and listening comprehension.

The live speech-to-speech translation feature is now available on Android devices in the US, Mexico, and India, with plans to extend it to the iOS Translate app next year. Meanwhile, the enhanced text translation features are being rolled out today in the US and Mexico across both the Android and iOS platforms, as well as on the web version of Translate. The Practice feature remains in beta, so it may not yet be accessible to all users.
