Microsoft is putting AI actions into the Windows File Explorer

Microsoft is enhancing its Advanced Paste feature in PowerToys for Windows 11 by incorporating an on-device AI model for improved functionality. With the introduction of the 0.96 update, users can now utilize either Microsoft’s Foundry Local tool or the open-source Ollama. These tools leverage your device’s neural processing unit (NPU) to run AI models locally, eliminating the need for cloud connectivity.

This update means there’s no need to purchase API credits for certain tasks, such as translating or summarizing text copied to your clipboard. Importantly, it allows your data to remain securely on your device.

In addition to the on-device AI capabilities, Advanced Paste can now be configured to interact with various online models, including Azure OpenAI, Gemini, and Mistral. Previously, the tool was limited to supporting only OpenAI.

The update also brings a fresh design to Advanced Paste, featuring a display of your current clipboard content and a convenient drop-down menu for model selection.
