Ring can verify videos now, but that might not help you with most AI fakes

Ring has unveiled an innovative tool known as Ring Verify, designed to ensure the authenticity of Ring videos by confirming they haven’t been tampered with or altered. However, the tool won’t authenticate videos that have been modified in any form, which means those seemingly security camera clips circulating on TikTok, often created using AI, won’t pass this new verification process.

According to Ring, every video downloaded from their cloud service now carries a “digital security seal.” To determine if a video is genuine, users can visit the Ring Verify website and upload the video directly from their device. If the platform labels a video as “verified,” it signifies that the video remains unchanged since its download from Ring’s servers. This verification process is built upon C2PA standards, as detailed by spokesperson Kaleigh Bueckert-Orme.

Even minimal modifications, such as adjusting brightness, will cause a video to fail verification. Ring cannot authenticate videos downloaded prior to the December 2025 rollout of this feature, nor those edited, cropped, or filtered in any manner post-download. This includes videos uploaded to platforms that compress files. Additionally, videos recorded with end-to-end encryption enabled are not eligible for verification.

In instances where Ring is unable to confirm a video’s authenticity, the tool does not provide specifics on what changes were made. Ring emphasizes that their verification process solely confirms the video remains untouched since its original download. For those seeking an unaltered version, Ring recommends requesting the original video link directly from the person who shared it via the Ring app.
