The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 brings the convenience of backward compatibility, allowing gamers to enjoy most of their original Switch titles while awaiting the arrival of new Switch 2 exclusives. Boasting 256GB of internal storage, the console offers decent space, yet may fall short for extensive digital libraries. Fortunately, Samsung’s 512GB P9 microSD Express card is available at a discounted price of $94.99 on Amazon with an on-page coupon, a modest $5 off. Alternatively, the 256GB version is also listed, though at its standard price of $54.99.
While the price cut on the P9 might appear minimal, it’s already about $20 cheaper than many other 512GB microSD Express options. The only less expensive alternative is Onn, Walmart’s store brand, priced around $85 but often out of stock. The Switch 2 is among the first popular devices to support microSD Express for storage expansion, and these cards can also be used in certain cameras, tablets, and drones equipped with a microSD USH-I slot. The P9 can reach sequential read speeds up to 800MB/s, though only devices with a microSD Express slot will fully utilize this speed potential.
The usefulness of 512GB storage largely depends on the size of your games. For instance, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment occupies 43.4GB, whereas Silksong requires just 4.1GB. While 768GB of total game storage might seem excessive, it’s worth noting that the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade demands a hefty 93GB download.
Even those who prefer physical game copies might find a microSD Express card necessary, as many publishers release games on game-key cards. These cartridges serve to authenticate game ownership but require digital downloads to the console’s storage. Furthermore, numerous indie titles release digitally, with physical versions arriving much later, if at all. Regardless of gaming preferences, having ample storage ensures you won’t need to constantly choose which games to leave behind when traveling.
