I previously reviewed an older version of this dash cam and was satisfied with its recording quality and user-friendliness. The R2-4K offers notable upgrades, delivering better video quality and simpler transfer of footage to your smartphone.
This dash cam records in 4K at 30 frames per second or 1080p at 60fps, covering a wide 150-degree viewing angle. This ensures a clear visual of events occurring directly in front and somewhat to the sides. The footage includes details like date, time, location, and speed, stored on a microSD card, which needs to be bought separately. You can watch the recorded clips on the R2-4K’s 2.4-inch screen or transfer them to your phone via Wi-Fi using Rove’s app.
The R2-4K is equipped with both a suction mount and a 3M adhesive mount, allowing it to be set up anywhere on your windshield. Between the two, the suction mount is easier to reposition, so it’s advisable to use it first to find the optimal place for the dash cam before deciding if you want to switch to the adhesive mount. This device requires a connection to its power source via a USB-C cable (two are provided), so it’s important to place it where the cable doesn’t hang and distract while driving.
Under normal circumstances, the R2-4K will take a continuous time lapse recording and overwrite older footage once the microSD card is filled. However, you can push an “Emergency Lock” button to preserve a specific clip. The dash cam’s built-in G-Sensor will detect an impact and automatically lock that section of video. If the dash cam stops recording, it’ll announce that so you can see what’s wrong. Hopefully you’ll never have to use Rove’s R2-4K for anything important, but it’s handy to have just in case.
