The new software wasn’t immediately accessible as an over-the-air update for my Kindle Colorsoft. Instead, I managed to download and install it manually by following Amazon’s guidelines. The feature functions effectively with light taps anywhere on the Colorsoft, and since it requires two taps in quick succession, accidental activation is unlikely. However, it’s restricted to a single direction—you can use it either to advance to the next page or scroll down a lengthy list of books. Perhaps a future update will support triple-taps to scroll upwards or return to a previous page.
Although the 5.18.1 software update is also available for previous versions of the entry-level Kindle, Paperwhite, Scribe, and Oasis, the new double-tap feature is exclusively available for the Colorsoft and 12th-generation Paperwhite, as confirmed by Amazon spokesperson Connor Rice to The Verge.
Update, March 26th: Added confirmation from an Amazon spokesperson.
