It’s almost surreal to acknowledge that Hollow Knight: Silksong made its debut this year, yet the anticipation continues with the announcement of its upcoming expansion. Scheduled for 2026, the free expansion titled Sea of Sorrow is being hailed by Team Cherry as the game’s “first significant expansion.”
In an exciting blog post, Team Cherry reveals, “Prepare for new areas, formidable bosses, and intriguing tools! Hornet’s journey unfolds further in our nautically inspired expansion, which will be available to all players at no cost next year. We’re keeping the finer details under wraps for now, but expect more revelations as we approach the launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea of Sorrow.”
Since its release, Silksong has captured the hearts of over 7 million buyers, with “millions more” engaging via Xbox Game Pass, as reported by Team Cherry.
Meanwhile, the original Hollow Knight is also set to experience a transformation. Team Cherry is developing a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition that integrates all the updates and enhancements seen in Silksong on this platform. This includes high frame-rate modes, elevated resolutions, and a suite of additional graphical effects. Owners of the current Switch version will receive this upgraded edition as a complimentary update in 2026.
In preparation for this release, Team Cherry plans to refresh all existing versions of the original game across modern platforms, introducing new features and resolving bugs. This will include full support for 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratios, catering to those with Steam Decks or ultrawide monitors. PC players can look forward to experimenting with these updates in a public beta.
