Spotify is enhancing shared account functionalities to simplify parental control over what their children listen to. Managed accounts are being introduced for Premium Family users in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands after a successful pilot last year, allowing account owners to provide a distinct music-only experience for kids under 13.
With managed accounts, parents can filter explicit content, block certain songs and artists, and hide videos that accompany some tracks on Spotify. The platform states that interactive features are limited for these accounts, and functionalities like messaging other users are entirely restricted. Unlike the standalone Spotify Kids app, managed accounts allow parents to select what their children can access within the primary Spotify app.
Children can freely add songs to their favorites, make playlists, and get personalized recommendations based on their listening patterns, without impacting the main account holder’s music history or algorithm. This separation ensures parents won’t see their Discover playlists or Wrapped results skewed by their child repeatedly listening to the K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack.
Managed accounts are available exclusively through Spotify’s Premium Family plan, which offers six individual Premium accounts for residents of the same household at $19.99 per month. Family Plan members can set up a managed account by selecting the “Add a Member” link on their account page, choosing “Add a listener aged under 13 (or local market equivalent).”
