The next Lord of the Rings movie debuts in December 2027

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming LOTR film featuring Andy Serkis not only as its lead but also as its director, is set to hit theaters on December 17th, 2027, according to Deadline.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, who played crucial roles in the original film trilogy and The Hobbit series, will be producing this film, as Deadline reports. Walsh and Boyens are tasked with writing the screenplay. This team is also set to produce another new LOTR movie, though The Hollywood Reporter notes that a director has yet to be confirmed for that project.

The Hunt for Gollum was first announced by Warner Bros. Discovery last year, with CEO David Zaslav projecting a 2026 release. The title remains provisional at this stage. This new film follows the 2024 release of the Lord of the Rings anime, The War of the Rohirrim. Meanwhile, Amazon is in the process of producing a third season of its Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power.
